How to Run OBS in Portable Mode on Windows
Portable mode stores an OBS configuration beside the portable application rather than using the normal installed setup's configuration location. On Windows, this can help keep a separate recording or test environment.
It does not automatically bundle your images, videos, plugins, and connected-account credentials into a complete transferable package.
Create the portable folder
- 1.Download the Windows ZIP from the official OBS download page.
- 2.Extract it to a folder you control, such as a dedicated folder in your user files.
- 3.Avoid using the normal Program Files installation folder for this portable setup.
- 4.Keep the extracted directory structure intact.
Use a name that clearly identifies it as the portable copy so you do not confuse its shortcuts with your everyday OBS installation.
Enable portable mode
OBS documents two Windows methods:
- Place an empty file named portable_mode or portable_mode.txt in the extracted OBS root directory.
- Launch its executable with the --portable option.
The marker-file approach avoids needing a special launch command each time. Launch bin/64bit/obs64.exe from the extracted package and check that this is the setup you intend to configure.
If adding a command-line option to a shortcut, put it after the quoted executable path, separated by a space.
Configure the copy deliberately
Set up or import the profiles and scene collections you need. Check the output folder, selected devices, and destination before starting any output.
Do not assume a newly extracted copy contains the settings from your installed version. Conversely, imported settings may contain a real streaming connection; importing them is not the same as starting with a blank test setup.
Keep media paths working
Scene collections refer to media files by location. Moving the portable application to another computer does not guarantee those paths still exist.
Keep required assets together in an organized folder and repair missing-file references after moving the setup. Recheck fonts, device availability, plugin support, and recording destinations too.
Know the limits
The official portable-mode guide documents this workflow for Windows, not a supported equivalent for Mac or Linux. Use those systems' supported configuration and backup methods instead.
Portable mode also does not remove hardware or encoding limits. Two OBS instances can still compete for the same camera and processing resources. Test one intended instance first rather than assuming independent configurations mean independent hardware.
