How to Install and Manage OBS Plugins and Scripts

Plugins and scripts extend OBS with extra sources, filters, or controls. Install an extension only when it solves a specific need and supports your OBS version, operating system, and computer architecture.

A plugin is a compiled extension. A script is loaded through OBS's Scripts tool. Their installation methods are different.

Check compatibility before downloading

Use the developer's official release page or documentation. Confirm the required OBS version and whether the download is for Windows, Mac, or Linux.

Also check the architecture. An x64 plugin is not the same as an ARM64 plugin; a file that works on one type of computer may not load on another.

Save your profiles and scene collections before a major extension change. A scene that uses a plugin's source may need that plugin when reopened on another installation.

Install a plugin

  1. 1.Stop outputs and close OBS.
  2. 2.Download the correct supported plugin release.
  3. 3.Use its installer if one is provided.
  4. 4.For a manual package, follow that plugin's directory instructions exactly.
  5. 5.Reopen OBS and check that the new source, filter, or control appears.

Avoid copying every plugin into one folder based on an old tutorial. OBS has platform-specific and legacy locations, and Flatpak installations have their own plugin packaging.

Test the plugin in a simple scene before relying on it in your main show.

Add an existing script

Open Tools → Scripts, click +, and select the script file. Review its description and settings, then test its action.

Python scripts may require a compatible Python installation and an appropriate path in the Scripts window's Python settings. Follow the script's and OBS's current requirements rather than installing an arbitrary Python version.

Only load scripts from a source you trust. They are executable code, not merely visual presets.

Remove or troubleshoot an extension

Remove a script from Tools → Scripts using the remove control. For a plugin, use its uninstaller or documented removal method with OBS closed.

If OBS starts failing after installation, note which extension and version changed. Test without it, or use OBS safe mode to help isolate extension-related problems.

Recheck after updates

Before updating OBS for an important session, check whether essential plugins support the new release. Keep time to test the complete setup afterward.

An extension being listed on an OBS community page does not mean it is maintained by OBS or guaranteed compatible with your streaming platform.
