How to Troubleshoot OBS Crashes and Software Conflicts

If OBS crashes, fails to open, or stops working after a change, start by isolating what changed. Plugins, capture utilities, graphics overlays, and drivers can interfere with OBS, but a list of historically conflicting apps does not prove one caused your problem.

Save your working settings and scene collections before removing components or reinstalling.

Identify the trigger

Note when the failure occurs: opening OBS, loading a particular scene, adding a device, opening a file browser, or starting an output.

Record any recent OBS, plugin, operating-system, or driver update. A reproducible trigger is more useful for troubleshooting than changing many settings at once.

Try a simpler setup

Close other capture or recording tools that you do not need. Temporarily turn off an optional graphics overlay and test again.

If one scene triggers the failure, try a basic scene containing only the required camera and microphone. Reintroduce other sources one at a time. Keep the original scene collection rather than deleting it to run the test.

Test without third-party extensions

OBS supports the --safe-mode launch option, which disables third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSocket features for that run.

On Windows, you can test with a copy of your OBS shortcut. Open its Properties, add a space and --safe-mode after the quoted executable path in Target, then launch that copy. Remove the option afterward to return to normal startup.

If OBS works in safe mode, investigate extensions and dependencies individually. That result narrows the problem but does not identify a specific plugin by itself.

Update the relevant component

Use official OBS releases and the plugin or device developer's supported packages. Confirm compatibility with your OBS version, operating system, and architecture before reinstalling a plugin.

If a problem started after one update, check that component's release notes and support guidance rather than downloading an unrelated repair script. Avoid broad changes to antivirus or firewall protection as a first step.

Collect useful diagnostics

Use Help → Log Files for a session in which the issue occurred. If OBS cannot open, follow official OBS support instructions for finding the log files on your operating system.

When contacting support, include the exact action that caused the failure, your OS and OBS version, recent changes, and the relevant diagnostic information. Do not repeatedly reinstall without preserving settings and evidence of the problem.
