Which OBS Version Works with Your Mac?
Choose an OBS release that supports both your macOS version and your Mac's processor type. The current OBS download page requires macOS 13 or later at the October 2026 check and provides separate Intel and Apple Silicon downloads.
An older Mac may need an older OBS release, but compatibility and ongoing support are different things.
Identify your Mac
Open Apple menu → About This Mac. Note the macOS version and whether the machine lists an Apple chip or an Intel processor.
Choose the Apple Silicon/arm64 download for an Apple Silicon Mac and the Intel/x86_64 download for an Intel Mac. Also confirm that any essential plugins match the OBS build you choose.
Check current-release support
| Your setup | What to check |
|---|---|
| Supported macOS on Apple Silicon | Current Apple Silicon OBS download and required plugin support |
| Supported macOS on Intel | Current Intel OBS download and required plugin support |
| macOS 12 or older | Official legacy compatibility table; the current release is not the same as the last compatible release |
Use the current download page as the source of truth for the release being offered. Do not assume a broad older help page saying macOS 11+ describes the newest installer.
If you cannot update macOS
OBS's official macOS Versions page lists previous compatible releases for older systems. Match your exact OS version there and obtain the installer from OBS's official release links.
Do not pick an old installer merely because its version number appears near your OS name in a copied or badly formatted table. Check the actual compatibility entry and release notes.
Older builds listed for compatibility are no longer supported. They may lack current fixes and have different virtual-camera or plugin behavior.
Check the whole workflow
Before changing macOS or OBS, confirm that your camera, audio devices, editor, and essential extensions support the intended combination.
For example, a compatible OBS app does not guarantee that an older virtual-camera component works in a newer receiving app. Test the device or output you actually rely on.
Preserve and test your setup
Export your profiles and scene collections, and keep the related media files before a major update. Then make a short recording using the intended camera, microphone, and output settings.
If you use a live platform or calling app, check the receiving picture and sound separately. Successful installation is the start of the compatibility check, not its end.
