How to Use OBS Studio Mode to Preview Scenes

OBS Studio Mode lets you prepare a scene in Preview while Program shows the current output. Use a transition when you are ready to put the prepared scene on air or into the normal recording output.

It is useful for checking the next layout before switching, but it is not a completely isolated editing environment.

Enable Studio Mode

Click Studio Mode in the Controls panel. OBS normally shows Preview on the left and Program on the right.

Program is the normal output picture. Preview is where you prepare the next scene. Check the labels if you have customized the interface rather than relying only on the panel position.

Prepare and transition a scene

  1. 1.Select the scene you want to prepare.
  2. 2.Inspect it in Preview.
  3. 3.Check camera framing, overlays, and the intended transition.
  4. 4.Click Transition when ready.
  5. 5.Verify that the intended picture appears in Program.

Selecting a scene in Preview is not the same as transitioning it to the normal output. Watch Program after the switch instead of assuming that the highlighted scene name proves what viewers see.

Understand shared-source changes

A source reused in several scenes remains the same source. Changing its camera properties or source-level filters can affect the scene currently using it in Program too.

Likewise, changing the microphone mix can affect the live sound; it is not protected simply because you are looking at Preview.

Use Studio Mode for controlled scene preparation and switching. Make substantial device, filter, or audio changes off air unless you have confirmed their effect on the active output.

Choose a simple transition first

A cut switches immediately, while a fade blends the scenes over its duration. Test the result and duration using scenes that are easy to distinguish.

Designed stinger transitions can add complexity and processing work. You do not need one for a reliable camera production.

Check alternate outputs

OBS Virtual Camera can be configured to send Preview instead of Program. A projector or another shared output may also show a specifically selected scene or preview.

If another app is receiving one of those views, your editing activity may be visible there even while the normal Program output remains unchanged. Inspect every output you actually use.

Rehearse with a recording

Practice switching between the main scene and another permitted scene while recording offline. Check the saved picture and audio for unintended changes.

Keep a clear main-scene name and a simple fallback transition so you can return to the intended output without searching through several similar layouts.
