OBS Keyboard Shortcuts and Hotkeys for Creators

OBS has built-in editing shortcuts and configurable Hotkeys for actions such as changing scenes, muting a source, or starting a recording. A small set of memorable keys can make a session easier to manage.

Editing shortcuts and custom hotkeys are different. A command that works while a source is selected in OBS may not act as a global shortcut while you use another app.

Set your own hotkeys

  1. 1.Open Settings → Hotkeys.
  2. 2.Find the action you want to control.
  3. 3.Click its shortcut field and press your chosen key combination.
  4. 4.Apply the changes.
  5. 5.Test the action while off air.

Useful starting actions include switching to your main scene, muting your microphone, and starting or stopping a recording. Avoid assigning a commonly typed key to a high-impact action such as starting a stream.

Use source-editing shortcuts

Select the source before using these common transform commands:

ActionWindowsMac
Edit TransformCtrl + ECommand + E
Reset TransformCtrl + RCommand + R
Fit to ScreenCtrl + FCommand + F
Stretch to ScreenCtrl + SCommand + S
Center to ScreenCtrl + DCommand + D

Fit preserves the picture's proportions. Stretch can distort it, so use that command only when it is intentional.

To crop visually, hold Alt on Windows or Option on Mac while dragging a source's edge handles.

Prevent accidental actions

Check for shortcuts already used by your browser, editor, or calling app. Consider combinations that are unlikely to be pressed while typing messages.

If separate start and stop actions are available, decide whether you want different keys rather than a toggle that could leave you unsure of the current state. Check the OBS controls after using a hotkey instead of assuming it worked.

If hotkeys work only inside OBS

Test them with the destination app focused. On Mac, review OBS Studio → Review App Permissions and the Accessibility permission used for keyboard shortcuts outside the app.

If the behavior differs by app or operating system, investigate that particular combination before relying on it during a show. Keep a visible mouse-accessible control available until your shortcuts are reliable.
