How to Fix a Quiet Microphone in OBS
If your microphone is too quiet in OBS, check the selected device and its original input level before adding software gain. Increasing the wrong source or amplifying a noisy input will not produce clear speech.
Use a short test recording to judge the result. The microphone meter is helpful, but it is not a substitute for listening.
Confirm which microphone OBS hears
Speak and watch the Audio Mixer. If the wrong meter moves, review Settings → Audio or the properties of the microphone source.
A laptop may be using its built-in microphone when you intended to use a USB microphone or headset. Choose the device deliberately rather than relying on a name such as Default.
Check the microphone before OBS
Move to the microphone's normal speaking position and check its physical input or gain control, if it has one. For an audio interface, use the manufacturer's instructions for the input you connected.
Then review the operating system's input level for the same device. Raise it gradually while speaking normally. Stop if your louder voice begins to sound distorted.
OBS's gain guidance recommends correcting the level at the source before applying additional gain inside OBS.
Check the OBS fader and filters
Make sure the microphone is not muted and its mixer fader has not been pulled down. Compare the signal with existing filters disabled one at a time.
A noise gate with a high opening threshold may make quiet speech disappear rather than simply sound low. An expander or other filter can also change how much of your voice passes through.
Add a Gain filter if needed
- 1.Open the microphone's Audio Mixer menu.
- 2.Choose Filters.
- 3.Click + → Gain.
- 4.Increase the gain in small steps while watching the meter and recording a sample.
The gain value is measured in decibels. More gain raises the captured sound, including background noise; it does not selectively improve your voice.
Compare the complete mix
Play your usual background sound and speak over it. If the microphone sounds clear alone but gets lost in the mix, lowering the other audio may be better than boosting the microphone further.
If the voice remains quiet only in one recording player or a video call, check that output's track or microphone selection. A louder OBS source will not fix a player listening to the wrong track or an app using a different microphone.
