How to Fix OBS Virtual Camera Problems
If OBS Virtual Camera is missing or blank in another app, check that the virtual camera is running and that the app selected it. Then investigate output selection, permissions, and the installation for your operating system.
Do not assume every website supports a virtual webcam. A platform restriction needs a supported connection method, not repeated driver changes.
Check the basic connection
- 1.Confirm that your intended source appears correctly inside OBS.
- 2.Click Start Virtual Camera in OBS.
- 3.Select OBS Virtual Camera in the receiving app's video settings.
- 4.Restart the receiving app if its camera list was opened before the device became available.
- 5.Check the result at the receiving end.
If the app still shows a physical webcam, it may not have switched to the OBS device.
Check the selected output
Open the virtual-camera settings using its gear control. Program, Preview, a fixed scene, and a fixed source can show different pictures.
A blank fixed scene or hidden source can produce a blank feed even when another OBS scene looks correct. Preview can expose editing activity if you selected it intentionally or accidentally.
Windows installation checks
For a standard supported Windows installation, OBS documents virtualcam-install.bat inside its data/obs-plugins/win-dshow folder. Its troubleshooting guide provides the installation method using administrator rights.
Use that script only from your genuine OBS installation and only when applicable to your build. Portable, custom, and ARM setups need their matching instructions. Do not download an arbitrary driver or register unrelated DLL files.
Mac permission and version checks
The OBS virtual-camera component may need approval as a camera extension. On macOS 13/14, check the relevant Security area; on macOS 15 and later, OBS directs users to System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Camera Extensions.
Allow the genuine OBS component and restart OBS as directed. Do not apply old legacy-plugin deletion instructions to a newer system without checking the exact versions.
Linux checks
OBS uses v4l2loopback for its Linux virtual camera. Follow the official distribution-specific setup for your installation rather than using Windows driver instructions.
If video works but there is no sound
The built-in virtual camera does not send the OBS audio mix. Choose a microphone separately in the receiving app, or configure a supported virtual-audio route.
If the device works in one compatible app but not another, investigate the receiving app's permissions and support. Keep its exact error message and your OS/OBS versions when asking for help.
